Description
In the last decades, the number of elderly people in developed countries is increasing, leading to significant modifications in the demographic structure of the population. This increase has been related to an increase in individuals suffering from neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer’s disease. This incidence evidences an emerging need to develop and improve therapeutic strategies able to prevent and treat diseases more effectively as possible. UN estimates that Spain will be the most aged country in the world in 2050, with 12.5 million of elderly people. Currently in Spain, Alzheimer disease is the most common neurodegenerative disorder, with incidence rates of 50-70% of the diagnosed dementias. The aim of the HEAD project is to promote more stimulating strategies, more dynamic and effective, which contribute to consolidate and further generalize the acquired learning. HEAD will provide a collaborative interface using multitouch technology that will allow subjects with mild to moderate dementia to train their memory skills in a group therapy. The system will customize the difficulty of the intervention to each participant’s needs and will involve them in a motivating intervention, while registers their performance during the sessions. These data will be available for therapists after the intervention to adjust the treatment and examine the progression.
